Major value expansion
12.63×Year-end shareholder value relative to the 2019 baseline. A viability and scaling story became a much larger investment expectation.
HISTORICAL VALUE WAVES
Tesla shows the size of the moves this radar is trying to understand: a major re-rating, a severe reset and renewed expansion. Spotting the next one requires a dated case for both the beginning and the end.
Retrospective case study, ending in 2024. These were not calls made by this platform. Annual endpoints cannot identify precise entry prices, exit prices or maximum drawdowns.
Lines join annual observations. Intra-year highs, lows and the route between them are not shown. These are shareholder returns, not a chart of technology adoption or current fair value.
Year-end shareholder value relative to the 2019 baseline. A viability and scaling story became a much larger investment expectation.
Year-end shareholder value fell sharply. Business growth alone did not protect the investment from repricing.
From the 2022 endpoint to 2024. An established technology can support another investment wave.
23 OCTOBER 2019
Tesla reported a return to GAAP profit and positive free cash flow, alongside Shanghai trial production. Those were observable checkpoints. The scale of the subsequent share-price rise was not known.
Original Q3 update ↗22 JULY 2020
A fourth consecutive profitable quarter and positive free cash flow strengthened the operating record. Regulatory-credit revenue exceeded reported GAAP net income, so profit quality still required examination.
Original Q2 update ↗16 NOVEMBER 2020
S&P announced Tesla’s addition to the S&P 500, effective 21 December. Index participation is a separate capital-market event, not a new technical breakthrough.
Original index announcement ↗25 JANUARY 2023
After the 2022 decline, Tesla reported 51% annual revenue growth and a 16.8% operating margin. These full-year results were published in January 2023. They must not be treated as information available before the 2022 fall.
Original full-year update ↗30 JANUARY 2025, REPORTING THE 2024 YEAR
The renewed shareholder-value rise coexisted with automotive gross margin falling from 28.5% in 2022 to 19.4% in 2023 and 18.4% in 2024. That divergence is a question about expectations and future earnings, not proof of an automatic sell point.
Original 2024 annual filing ↗A material surprise changes the previous consensus. Independent evidence supports the change. A specific instrument captures the economics, and its price still leaves room for a plausible outcome.
New evidence keeps improving the thesis. Demand and economics support the narrative. Price behaviour confirms rather than substitutes for those observations.
New information slows, expected success becomes demanding, economics weaken, or price and the narrative persistently diverge. Review the predeclared invalidation condition before hindsight supplies an explanation.
The aim is a defensible entry and exit zone with explicit risk, not a promise to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. The original radar brief focuses on rapid re-rating windows of roughly two to eight weeks; this annual history illustrates scale, not the resolution needed to trade those windows.
Tesla alone would teach a dangerously selective lesson. Fisker’s June 2024 filing and Nikola’s February 2025 filing record Chapter 11 proceedings. Nikola warned of significant or complete equity loss. Technical promise, sector growth and public attention do not ensure shareholder survival.
This is the first worked historical example, with failure controls. A tested strategy still needs a predeclared universe, unsuccessful and uneventful cases, realistic costs, out-of-sample evaluation and a prospective record.
