Next-generation geothermal
New drilling methods may make reliable geothermal energy available in more places. Repeatable projects will show whether the promise travels beyond an exceptional site.
What I’m watching: A dated change in how independent sources describe this technology’s possibilities, followed by new voices and sustained attention.
What could change the picture?
- What the evidence says
- Fervo reports that a first project block has begun commercial operation. Other blocks remain in commissioning or construction. Sustained operating results and costs will matter more than treating the entire planned site as complete.
- Early recognition to watch
- A dated change in how independent sources describe this technology’s possibilities, followed by new voices and sustained attention
- Commercial confirmation
- Funded repeat projects demonstrate drilling and reservoir performance. Next evidence: Collect measured reservoir output, drilling cost per productive well, permits and project finance.
- What people used to expect
- Working expectation to monitor: Cost per dependable MWh over reservoir life remains constrained by Drilling, reservoirs, permitting and capital. This is a research hypothesis, not measured consensus.
- What may be changing
- Potential change to investigate: Funded repeat projects demonstrate drilling and reservoir performance. Current evidence does not yet demonstrate a broad change in belief.
- Who could benefit
- Candidate how a business could benefit in Next-generation geothermal: Test drilling process IP, reservoir rights and repeatable sites against one favourable demonstration.
- Timing
- Catalyst dependent; no supported repricing date yet
- What the market may already expect
- Current price, expectations and investable exposure have not been assessed in this packet. Existing source evidence is not a buy or sell cue.
- The strongest reason to be cautious
- Reservoir performance, induced seismicity and drilling cost may limit transfer across sites.
- What would change the view
- Reassess if decline or pumping costs prevent contract economics being repeated.
Detailed research notes
Dated research baseline, imported today rather than a new event: IRENA reports a global weighted-average geothermal LCOE of USD 89/MWh for projects commissioned in 2025. (2026-07). LCOE is not a buyer tariff, firm-power contract, project return or universal site cost. Low deployment and a small number of projects can move the weighted average; enhanced-geothermal economics are not isolated here. Fervo reports first-block commercial operation and PPA revenue. Two further Phase I blocks remain in commissioning, targeted by 1 January 2027; 400 MW Phase II remains under construction for 2028. (2026-10-01). Interested issuer statement, not independently inspected acceptance or operating data. First-block output does not establish reservoir lifetime, delivered MWh, cost, availability to a new buyer or completed full-site capacity.
Follow the evidence
Fervo reports first-block commercial operation and PPA revenue. Two further Phase I blocks remain in commissioning, targeted by 1 January 2027; 400 MW Phase II remains under construction for 2028. Limitation: Interested issuer statement, not independently inspected acceptance or operating data. First-block output does not establish reservoir lifetime, delivered MWh, cost, availability to a new buyer or completed full-site capacity. Existing research checked 2026-10-12.
DOE completed the stated environmental reviews and consultations for proposed federal support of the initial 400 MW expansion; the subsequent 600 MW expansion requires separate review. Limitation: Not a loan award, all-permits clearance, operating capacity or universal environmental assurance. Fervo remains responsible for required permits. Water, induced seismicity, tribal sovereignty, worker and community outcomes require their own evidence. Existing research checked 2026-10-12.

Fervo reported Cape Station fully contracted at 500 MW, including a 15-year 31 MW Shell Energy PPA. This is historical contract-stage evidence. Limitation: Do not sum this overlapping full-site contracted measure with first-block output. Current unallocated supply, delivery terms, customer acceptance and unit economics are not established.
